Plans by Kyushu Electric Power to use mixed oxide (MOX), or ‘pluthermal’, fuel for nuclear power generation have been approved by residents of Genkai in Japan’s Saga prefecture.
The Kansai plans are aimed at using a growing stockpile of spent nuclear fuel at the unit 3 of its Genkai power plant. The move, which followed assurances that the facility would be safe, saw the local assembly of Genkai agree to compile a report to promote a nuclear fuel cycle.
The project is expected to receive the prefecture’s final endorsement by the end of this fiscal year, and Kyushu intends to start loading MOX by fiscal 2010.
