The land acquisition process for the 9900MWe nuclear plant planned for Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra has been completed.

Maharashtra Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule in a written reply to the Maharashtra Legislative Council recently said the state government was assisting the central authorities to acquire land for the project.

The Jaitapur project is being undertaken by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and the Electricite de France (EDF) which is planning the construction of six EPR units. The project faces opposition from local residents. The state had previously frozen or cancelled 11 thermal power projects in face of protests. However, according to a government official, almost all PAPs (project-affected people) have accepted compensation. The last report had suggested around 84% of landowners at the site in Konkan had agreed to receive compensation.
