Finnish power utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) on 26 January filed with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment an application for the renewal of the operating licence of units 1 and 2 at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant.
The renewal is until the end of 2038. The current 20-year operating licence must be renewed by the end of 2018, TVO said. In connection with the licence application, TVO has submitted a periodic safety review to the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (Stuk). Such reviews are performed every 10 years, the last one being in 2008.
According to TVO, electricity produced by the two 880MWe boiling water reactors accounts for about 17% of the electricity consumed in Finland and for about 22% of the electricity produced in Finland. Olkiluoto 1 began commercial operation in October 1979 and Olkiluoto 2 in July 1982.
