Unit 5 of Bulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear plant on 3 November was awarded a licence to operate for a further ten years. Plant Director Ivan Andreev said Kozloduy NPP intends to take additional measures to increase the safety of the unit which could now operate until 2047 provided its licence is renewed every ten years.
The Kozloduy plant, situated on the Danube river, has been upgrading its two ageing VVER-1000 reactors at the cost of BGN674m ($402m). The reactors produce about a third of Bulgaria’s electricity.
A consortium led by Russian nuclear utility Rosenergoatom and Rusatom Service (both parts of state nuclear corporation Rosatom) and France’s EDF undertook the upgrade of Kozloduy 5 and are now upgrading Kozloduy 6, the operational licence of which runs until October 2019.
