Simulation specialist CAE is to launch its first Linux-based simulation technology with delivery of a new system to Entergy’s Pilgrim BWR in 2001.
According to CAE, Linux is an open source computer system similar to Unix, but because people worldwide can have access to the Linux source code it can be developed and enhanced more quickly. When used for simulation, CAE says, it is valuable for its stability, adaptabilty and affordable price.
CAE began developing Linux-based simulation in early 2000 in collaboration with Entergy and the Pilgrim plant, which is in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and the new system was due for delivery in January. According to Pilgrim’s Franco Pasquale, the plant “was seeking to explore new paths for future applications. Our UNIX and Windows NT-based systems work well, and the Linux-based system is scheduled for new applications like classroom training.”
