The UK’s House of Lords is inviting members of the public to email their views on whether or not the European Union (EU) should have a say in how member states ensure the safety of their nuclear installations and manage their nuclear waste.
The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee D (Environment and Agriculture) is currently conducting an inquiry into European Commission proposals to introduce EU legislation on the safe management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. Lord Renton of Mount Harry, chairman of the committee, said: “The use of nuclear power is a massive issue at the moment and the EU are seeking to establish common practices across Europe. We are looking for expert opinion from industry and governments but we want also to hear from the rest of the country.”
Responses received will be considered by the committee and may be published on its website. The website will operate during the committee’s oral evidence hearings which are due to finish by the end of March. The committee plans to publish a report in June.
