Indian Heavy Engineering company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has despatched a second steam generator to the Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Karnataka for units 5&6 under construction at the plant, both indigenous 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs).

Kaiga Generating Station, situated near the river Kali in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), began operation in 2000. The first four units are indigenous 220 MWe PHWRs. Unit 4 began operation in 2010.

The second steam generator was “flagged off” from L&T’s AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat 11 months ahead of the contractual delivery schedule. L&T delivered the first steam generator to Kaiga 5&6 in March, 12 months ahead of schedule.

Anil V Parab, Whole-time Director & Sr Executive Vice President – L&T Heavy Engineering & L&T Valves, said L&T Heavy Engineering continues to establish world records in delivery of critical nuclear equipment. “The 11-month early delivery of this second steam generator is another example of consistency and resilience even during pandemic and supply chain disruptions. We are fully geared up as the trusted and dedicated partner of the Department of Atomic Energy and NPCIL to triple India’s current installed nuclear power capacity to 100 GWe by 2047.”
