Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI) has agreed to collaborate with Spanish engineering giant Iberdrola Engineering & Construction in the construction of potential nuclear power plants in Europe..
The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate on an exclusive basis for the qualification process to a European utility. This is the first agreement for the Mitsubishi’s advanced pressurised water reactor (APWR) in Europe.
Under the MOU, MHI will be responsible for engineering of the NPP and major plant components and equipment. Iberdrola will take charge of installation work and design, procurement and commissioning of nuclear island.
MHI says that the initiative aims to accelerate market penetration of its EU-APWR, which at 1700MWe is one of the world’s largest capacity reactor designs on offer.
The EU-APWR design is based on the 1538MW advanced pressurised water reactor planned for the Tsuruga Power Station units 3 and 4 for the Japan Atomic Power Company. Design changes have been made to reflect European regulations and the demand of EU customers for enhanced operating performance. MHI is currently conducting a feasibility study of the EU-APWR for compliance with European safety requirements.
