A report into the business case for British Nuclear Fuels’ proposed mixed-oxide (MOX) plant at Sellafield (see April issue of NEI, pp24-25) will be the subject of a second public consultation by the government’s Environment Agency to last two months. BNFLs’ application to commission and operate the plant was originally made in November 1996.
The need for an in-depth assessment of BNFL’s business case for the MOX plant was highlighted during an initial public consultation conducted by the Environment Agency early last year. At that time, several commentators pointed to the lack of an economic case for operating the plant in the company’s application to commission the plant. The Agency then appointed the PA Consulting Group to carry out an independent assessment which has now been released for the consultation.
