A new report compiled for the Dutch Christian Democrat party (CDA) calls for more nuclear energy in the country’s generation portfolio.
Measures outlined in the report on sustainable energy include the only operating Dutch nuclear plant at Borssele to remain operational for longer than currently planned and for new reactors to be built.
The CDA hopes to address concerns over energy imports and aims to move towards provision with renewable energy. However, the report concludes, in the near future the two options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are sequestration and nuclear generation.
“Nuclear energy will remain an option during the transition to durable energy to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity production,” the party said in a statement.
The policy paper by the CDA presents a unified approach to Borssele, which had until recently been scheduled for closure. Now, all parties in the ruling coalition agree it must remain opperational. The main opposition party continues to support closure of the 450 MWe plant in 2013.
