The Armenian nuclear power plant can operate safely to the end of its design life in 2016, according to the deputy chairman of the Armenian energy commission, Nikolay Grigoryan. He believes there is no alternative to the plant until that time as it produces 40% of Armenia’s power. He said a new nuclear plant could be constructed to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply in future.
The country would need $0.6-1.2 billion to build a new plant -$600-700 million using Russian technology or $1-1.2 billion using Western technology.
