India will increase its nuclear power generation capacity eight-fold in the next 20 years with the installation of additional reactors, said Nuclear Fuel Complex chief executive C Ganguly.
He said: “The country’s nuclear power generation will reach 20,000MWe by 2020, and will meet 8% of the country’s total requirements.” India currently generates 2720MWe from 14 reactors meeting 2.5% of its total demand. Two new reactors with a combined capacity of 1000MWe are under construction with Russian collaboration.
Ganguly explained that while India has plentiful supplies of coal, but that the widespread use of coal as a fuel is leading to global warming.
