Finnish utility TVO says that 2011 was a record year for maintenance at Olkiluoto 2. A EUR 160 million outage at the plant involved numerous upgrades and increased the net output of the unit by around 20 MW to 880 MW.

The OL2 outage, which TVO describes as the largest in the plant’s history, included replacement of low-pressure turbines, steam extraction lines, generator and its cooling system, I&C for condensate clean up system, inner isolation valves of main steam lines, low voltage switchgears and main seawater pumps. It is similar to an outage conducted at Olkiluoto 1 in 2010.

Meanwhile, in December TVO said that it had been informed by the Areva-Siemens consortium that the Olkiluoto 3 plant is scheduled to be ready for regular electricity production in August 2014.

The utility also confirmed that its shareholders (ten industrial companies and 45 energy companies) had decided to commence the bidding and engineering phase of the Olkiluoto 4 project. Costs for that phase of the project will not exceed EUR 300 million, TVO said.
