The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA), the owner and operator of the El Dabaa NPP under construction with Russian assistance, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at COP28. The MOU, which was signed by ENEC Managing Director & CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi and NPPA Board Chairman Professor Dr Amged El-Wakeel, provides for nuclear energy co-operation.
ENEC, the UAE’s mandated nuclear energy developer and leader of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme has acquired industry leading knowledge through the development of the Arab world’s only NPP at Barakah in Abu Dhabi. The plant was constructed by a South Korean consortium and comprises four APR1400 reactors, three of which are already operating, with unit 4 now undergoing final commissioning. Egypt’s El-Dabaa NPP will be the second NPP in the region. It will comprise four VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors, with a total capacity of 4.8 GWe. The first unit is expected to begin operating in 2026, and the plant is anticipated to be operating at full capacity with all four units by 2030.
