Fuel loading at Tianwan

26 October 2005

China's Tianwan nuclear power station, located about 460km north of Shanghai, has begun loading fuel, the official Xinhua News Agency reports.

The first of two Russian-designed 1060MWe PWRs planned for the site began construction in 1999 and culminated with the 10-day process of loading fuel, which began on 18 October.

The $3.2 billion facility in eastern Jiangsu province is expected to begin commercial production by the end of this year. A start-up date for the second generator had not yet been confirmed.

The site may ultimately generate up to 10GWe with up to eight reactors, part of China’s declared plan to build 31 nuclear power stations by 2020.
