Sellafield Ltd and International Nuclear Services have started transporting a flask of solid highly active waste to The Netherlands. This is a continuation of the programme of repatriating foreign waste to overseas customers as required by contractual obligations and UK government policy.
The transport of the waste, by rail, sea and road, is being undertaken by International Nuclear Services, the world’s leading transporter of nuclear material. INS has an unparalleled safety record with more than five million miles traveled during the last 40 years, without any incident involving the release of radioactivity.
The waste is in a solid glass form, packaged inside 28 stainless steel canisters, which in turn sit within an extremely robust 100te transport flask. This flask is built to stringent international standards and is sealed, tested and secured before being transported. This ensures that it provides the shielding required to contain the radioactivity and to protect our employees, the public and the environment.
The transport itself will take place in accordance with all relevant national and international regulations and has been licensed by the UK government and that of The Netherlands.
