The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) nuclear energy department has predicted the number of nuclear power reactors worldwide will increase 60% by 2030.

Speaking at the 30th Anniversary Symposium of Korean Nuclear Power Generation, in Seoul, South Korea, Yury Sokolov said nuclear power “has the potential to be a significant, reliable, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source that can contribute to providing access to affordable energy services.” However, to achieve this, the sector needed to tackle a number of challenges he stressed, such as guaranteeing uranium production; tackling waste management and fuel cycle problems; improving public acceptance; and integrating new nuclear power providers within international networks.
