Canada’s Moltex Energy said on 25 May that it had completed Phase 1 of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s (CNSC) Pre-Licensing Vendor Design Review (VDR) for Moltex’s 300 MW Stable Salt Reactor – Wasteburner (SSR-W). The CNSC concluded that Moltex has a clear understanding of the Canadian regulatory requirements and expectations.
“Completing Phase 1 of the VDR is a major achievement,” said Rory O’Sullivan, CEO for North America, Moltex Energy. “This demonstrates that our technology is progressing in the right direction, and gives current and future customers confidence in our design of advanced nuclear reactors.”
The VDR is an optional service provided by the CNSC. The objective of a review is to verify the acceptability of a nuclear reactor design with respect to Canadian nuclear regulatory requirements and expectations, as well as Canadian codes and standards. The review does not certify or license the design. A Phase 1 VDR provides early and general feedback to the vendor about its reactor design and processes on matters related to CNSC regulatory requirements and expectations.
