New chairman for UK national nuclear lab

Richard Maudslay has been named as the new chairman of the UK national nuclear lab (NNL).

He has been appointed for three years from 18 May and becomes the NNL’s first chairman since the lab became a stand-alone business. He succeeds Richard Ramsay from the government’s Shareholder Executive, who has filled the post on a temporary basis.

Making the announcement, Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O’Brien said: “As the UK upgrades its nuclear capacity, we need the National Nuclear Laboratory to be a leader in high-tech nuclear skills in the UK, and indeed the world. I welcome the appointment of Richard Maudslay and his work to develop what will be an increasingly important facility."

Much of Richard Maudslay’s career has been in the power engineering sector including seven years as the managing director of NEI Parsons Ltd, prior to its merging with Rolls-Royce. At Rolls-Royce for five years Richard was the MD of their Industrial Power Group and a Main Board Director. Having led Rolls-Royce’s exit from large steam power generation and prepared other parts of the group for sale.

Since 1998, he has held a range of non-executive chair and director roles with publicly listed, privately owned and government owned businesses. These have included being chair of DSTL (MoD Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) between 2005 and 2008 at a time when it was experiencing considerable change. His involvement with government also includes being a member of the DTI Enterprise and Business Group Board (2002-07) and chair of the North East Science and Industry Council (2004–08). His DSTL role was also a Ministerial appointment.New chairman for UK national nuclear lab
