Simulator upgrade for Callaway

20 February 2009

AmerenUE has placed an order to upgrade the simulator at its Callaway nuclear plant with L-3 MAPPS’ Orchid suite of software tools. Work will start immediately and the simulator is slated to enter service early next year.

In 2008, L-3 successfully replaced the Callaway simulator’s reactor core model with a higher-fidelity version generated by its Orchid Core Builder software.

This latest upgrade project aims to further improve the simulator’s performance, while standardising the simulation environment and toolset will make it easier to maintain. The Callaway simulator is currently made up of plant models delivered by the original simulator vendor as well as models developed by utility and L-3 engineers using L-3 software tools.

The legacy models being replaced are largely electrical systems, and control logic for all plant systems, auxiliary process systems, the standby diesel generator, containment, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These models will be replaced or upgraded to work within the Orchid Modelling Environment.

This order for an L3-MAPPS upgrade follows one in January from South African utility Eskom Holdings for refurbishment of its Koeberg operator training simulator.
