The UK Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) has confirmed that BNFL has satisfactorily closed out the recommendations of a report on the control and supervision of operations at Sellafield, published in February 2000.

In response to the report, which contained 28 recommendations, Sellafield management developed a three-year plan

containing 41 key objectives. A project team was established to lead the implementation, and ensure that best practices identified in some areas of operations were spread across the whole site.

Key achievements include:

• The creation of a single

safety management system at Sellafield, with roles

and responsibilities clearly

identified.

• Creating the post of director

Sellafield site, with full accountability for safety and operations across the site.

• Major changes to the BNFL organisation from board level down, which refreshed and strengthened the organisation at all levels and provided clear lines of accountability.

• Implementation of robust independent audit and review arrangements, through the use of external groups, and the establishment of corporate independent inspectors and independent compliance advisors.

• Focused training to enhance behavioural skills and

attitudes through implementation of clear standards and expectations.

BNFL chief executive Norman Askew said: “We have now successfully made the transformation we promised to all our stakeholders.”
