After more than a year since a modification to correct long-running problems with turbine blade cracking, a recent planned outage at PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant found no cracked blades.

During the outage, from 1 March-17 March, workers did however replace ‘several dozen’ blades ‘to enhance safe and reliable operations until next spring’s refuelling outage,’ PPL Susquehanna said.

The results were consistent with data recorded from turbine monitoring equipment, it said. Susquehanna said it has been working closely with the turbine manufacturer — GE — to resolve the issues.
