South Korea Despite efforts by Korean researchers to get US DoE support for development of a liquid metal reactor (LMR), the US government will continue to try to limit the autonomy of that programme in South Korea.
Hahn Do-hee, in charge of the programme at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (Kaeri), said: “The term ‘fast breeder reactor’ has never been used” in Korea for the project. “We use LMR recognising our fast reactor programme as a reactor development programme instead of a fuel cycle programme.” US officials say the Koreans are splitting hairs. “Whether they call it a LMR or a fast reactor, it is a potential breeder and we will continue to look at this programme with that potential in the background.”
