The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is responding to allegations of weak security at Indian Point. This was prompted by a report that was commissioned for the plant operator Entergy on the state of security at Indian Point 2.

According to the report, a majority of guards at the plant believe that they could not adequately protect the unit against a major terrorist attack. In addition, 59% of the guards said that they believed that there was a very relaxed attitude towards raising security-related issues.

The NRC will conduct a special inspection of the plant’s security, which will be carried out by a senior inspector from NRC Region I supported by several staff members from the NRC Office of Nuclear Safety & Incident Response. The inspection is scheduled to take a week, but this could be extended if required.
