The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) in the UK has produced a new report designed to assist users in the selection, use and maintenance of appropriate hand-held radiation monitoring equipment. The full report is available free of charge on the NRPB website, www.nrpb.org.uk.

An employer has a duty to provide suitable instrumentation for the monitoring of controlled and supervised areas. Selection of appropriate instruments can be an easy task in some circumstances but a difficult one in others. The report covers a wide range of radiation sources and both dose rate and contamination monitoring. It also includes guidance on surveying techniques, instrument maintenance and ways of determining the nature of potentially complicated radiation fields.

This report will be useful to radiation protection advisors and anyone choosing radiation monitoring equipment. The fields covered include the nuclear industry, industrial and research and teaching applications.

The report gives guidance on the general types of detectors and their applications but does not identify equipment by manufacturer.
