A task force is being set up by the South Korean government in order to select a site for a low- to intermediate-level nuclear waste storage facility. The panel, to be made up of around 20 experts from both the government and civilian life, will check topographical and geological aspects of prospective sites and conduct polls to determine the willingness of the local population to accept such a site. The National Assembly is expected to pass a law over coming weeks that will outline a standard operating procedure for the development of future waste sites.
Existing low-level waste sites will be full by 2008, and an alternative site selected by the government in 2003 faced significant local opposition.
