As a result of an increased consumption of electricity in 2001, the Romanian government decided to speed up the works at Unit 2 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, which is due to begin operation in 2005.

Works on unit 2 started in 1989, when a third of the necessary funds for building the unit was invested. Completion requires a further $680 million. Romania has pledged half of this sum, the remainder to be provided by Canadian and Italian investors.
