Ontario Power Generation has estimated that it would cost C$18.2 billion ($13.3 billion) to decommission Ontario’s 20 nuclear power reactors and dispose of the wastes. It assumes interim storage of all wastes followed by disposal of intermediate-level wastes and deep geological disposal of spent fuel from 2035.
Dismantling would start 30 years after reactor shutdown, and account for about a third of the overall costs. OPG has set aside C$2 billion ($1.5 billion) for decommissioning, and will add to this about C$454 million ($330 million) per year for five years, then a reduced amount over the remaining lives of the reactors.
