Perma-Fix Environmental Services has announced the completion of a project aimed at stabilising low level radioactive beryllium chloride, contaminated during the Cold War. The material was collected from the decontamination of beryllium electro refining equipment at the Rocky Flats site in Colorado.
Beryllium chloride waste is very difficult to stabilise, but Perma-Fix succeeded in modifying its Perma-Fix Process to do this. The work was carried out at the company’s research facilities in northern Florida.
The decontaminated equipment and the stabilised beryllium chloride material will be disposed of at the Department of Energy’s Navada facility.
