Bechtel National Inc and BNFL have selected the Plantspace Design Series for detailed engineering of a tank waste remediation system for liquid radioactive wastes at the USDoE’s Hanford site in Washington State. In August BNFL won a $6.9 billion clean up contract at the Hanford site.

The US government produced plutonium and other nuclear materials for defence purposes at Hanford during the cold war. The clean up requires the immobilisation of millions of gallons of radioactive wastes created as a byproduct of plutonium production. Over an initial 24 month design phase, the project team is developing a preliminary design for the tank waste remediation system. The initial software acquisition involves 70 engineering licences. Engineering positions are likely to increase to 300 during the detailed design phase.
