Refurbishment of Dock 9 at the UK’s Devonport Royal Dockyard has been completed. The $600 million project, commissioned in 1993, makes the Plymouth naval yard the only refit complex for the four nuclear vessels in Britain’s Trident fleet.

Each element of the project has been factored to withstand seismic equivalents of the earthquake that destroyed the Japanese city of Kobe in 1995, plus a 40% margin.

The yard has 112 fire-rated doors, designed, supplied and installed by passive fire-protection specialist Furmanite. Each door-set has been seismically anchored into its structural opening, and most are fire-rated up to two hours.
