The Japan Atomic Energy Institute has built a superconducting coil to act as the prototype for the solenoid coil to be used in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).
ITER is a joint effort between Japan, Europe and Russia. It will generate power by promoting fusion events within hot plasma, maintained in a doughnut shape by magnets. The coil will sit in the hole of the doughnut and induce a current in the plasma.
