Korea’s Wolsong 1 pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) remains offline indefinitely while the Korean regulator continues to review its licence for continue operation.

Last week, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) also began its review of the post-Fukushima nuclear stress test, which are one of the ‘critical factors’ for the continued operation of Wolsong 1. KINS said that the review is expected to take at least two months.

The 678MW Wolsong 1 PHWR was shut down in November 2012, when its operating licence expired after 30 years of operation. Operator Korean Hydro Nuclear Power (KHNP) had submitted an application for continue operation to the regulatory body in late 2009.

The regulator said that it ‘cannot predict’ when the licence review will be completed.
