An experimental line to develop and verify pyrochemical partitioning of spent fuel was inaugurated at the Rez Nuclear Research Institute by representatives of the Czech Power Company, the Radioactive Waste Repository Authority and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The new facility is for R&D of actinide and fission product separation using the fluoride volatility method. That process involves the flame fluorination of spent fuel with fluorine gas and separation of volatile compounds such as UF6 from non-volatile compounds.

The Institute says converting spent oxide fuel into fluoride form plays a crucial role in its partitioning and transmutation programme..
