Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom and Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy on 17 May signed a roadmap for the implementation of the second stage of nuclear power plant construction.
In September 2018 Russia and Uzbekistan signed an agreement on cooperation in construction, with Rosatom planning to build two units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors. The roadmap envisages the implementation in 2019-2020 of the main measures for construction of the plant including specific steps for the second phase of the project, such as preparation of data for development of an environmental impact assessment (EIA), instructions for creating a preliminary report on the safety justification, and preparation and coordination of contracts for the implementation of the project.
The press service of Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said on16 May that the first stage of engineering surveys on the choice of a site for the plant had been completed, while the EIA and technical documentation was in preparation.
Earlier, the Director General of Uzatom, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov had confirmed that a contract would be signed by the end of 2019. A Nuclear Technologies Information Centre, a joint project between UzAtom and Rosatom, has already opened in Tashkent. A contract has also been signed to begin engineering surveys for the nuclear plant.
