Rosatom has begun installation of the dome part of the outer containment shell (NZO) at unit 2 of the Rooppur NPP under construction in Bangladesh. Installation of the lower tier of the dome has already been completed. The installation of the large structure, weighing 200 tonnes and with a diameter of 46.3 metres, took about five hours. The NZO dome was lifted and installed in its designed position at a height of 48.8 metres.
“The outer containment shell is one of the key localising safety systems,” explained Alexey Deriy, Vice President of ASE JSC and Director of the Rooppur NPP construction project. “This is a reinforced concrete structure that protects the reactor installation from external influences and is capable of withstanding an earthquake, tsunami or hurricane.”
The reactor building is also protected by an internal containment shell, which was installed in June 2022 and concreted in May 2023. The double containment is a distinctive feature of NPPs with Russian VVER-1200 reactors. Rosatom said it will deliver fuel to Rooppur NPP in October.
