During the official visit of Russian Federation President Dmitry Medvedev to India, Head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko stated that the two states were going to develop jointly a nuclear fast neutron reactor of a new generation.
The head of Rosatom specified that Russia was interested in development of the thorium cycle, as India owns one of the largest thorium resources.
In another development, the Russian news agency Itar-Tass reports that a Rosatom source informed journalists that Russia plans to have a commercial fast neutron reactor by 2020, the BN 1200. The source also said that VVER thermal reactors would be built up to the 2030s, and then turn toward fast reactors.
