A Rosatom delegation, led by Deputy Director General Nikolay Spassky, is on a working visit to Myanmar to evaluate the initial results of a nuclear energy cooperation agreement signed in February. During the visit, Spassky and Myanmar’s Deputy Minister for Science & Technology, Aung Zeya attended the first meeting of the joint coordinating committee established in accordance with the February agreement. Discussions covered bilateral cooperation on establishment of a regulatory framework, development of nuclear infrastructure, education and training personnel, and work related to public opinion in Myanmar. Following the meeting, a protocol was signed.
Spassky also held talks with Minister for Science & Technology Myo Thein Kyaw and Minister for Electrification Taung Khan on areas of cooperation related to the construction of power units based on Russian designs and the development of nuclear infrastructure.
The Russian delegation attended the opening of Myanmar’s first Science Festival, jointly organised by Rosatom and the Ministry of Science & Technology (MOST), which takes place simultaneously at two venues – the Nuclear Technology Information Centre opened in February and at the Yangon Technological University. More than 2200 students, experts, and university staff participated in the festival programme.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Myo Thein Kyaw noted: "Our country faces an ambitious task of incorporating nuclear energy into our energy mix. We have already started this process and are already thinking about who will undertake this work and support the project in the coming years.” Dr Moe Min Htwe, Deputy Director of the Department of Atomic Energy within MOST said nuclear energy can be applied in various peaceful areas, and helps the young generation to acquire knowledge in this field.
In November 2022 the Department of Electric Power Planning at the Ministry of Electrification signed the Мemorandum of understanding (MOU) with Rusatom Energy Projects on cooperation in conducting a joint pre-feasibility study on NPP construction in Myanmar using Russian small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. The MOU fixes the next steps for Russian-Myanmar cooperation for implementation of a SMR project in Myanmar.
