The starboard reactor of Russia’s floating NPP (PATES – Plavuchaya Atomnaya TeploElektroStantsiya) Akademik Lomonosov in Pevek (Chukotka Autonomous Okrug) has resumed operation after minor repairs. Now the plant is delivering power in accordance with the Chaun-Bilibinsky energy centre dispatch schedule and is operating normally with both reactor units.
The FNPP comprises a dedicated system of coastal infrastructure to support the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit, which is equipped with two KLT-40S reactors with an electric power of 35MW each. The power capacity of the FNPP is 70MW, the heat capacity is 50 Gcal/h.
Earlier in October, the starboard reactor unit (RU-1) was disconnected from the electrical power system as a result of an automatically triggered protection system. Nuclear utility Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom) said this was the result of a storm. The port side reactor (RU-2) continued to operate normally. Akademik Lomonosov, the world’s only operating floating NPP, was first connected to the power grid in December 2019, and began commercial operation in May 2020.
