Isolating and containing the most dangerous accumulation of radioactive materials within Chernobyl is a better alternative than the costly international project to build a new confinement around it, according to Valery Gnidenko, the new technology manager of the Kurchatov Institute.
Gnidenko claims that the decision to go ahead with the Shelter Implementation Plan was political rather than technical. He said that the new confinement is only a temporary measure and will cost 750-800 million Euros, and that the main purpose of current operations at Chernobyl should be minimising the release of harmful substances. He believes this could best be achieved by isolating the most dangerous pockets of material and filling those spaces with specially developed chemicals to confine the material.
