King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (K.A.CARE) has formed a strategic partnership with Finnish nuclear regulator STUK to develop a radiation and nuclear safety authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
STUK said it will support K.A.CARE in designing and executing required activities to establish the regulatory body and its safety oversight functions and in developing safety regulations. STUK will also provide training to the staff and give assistance in the recruitment process.
STUK said this was one of the very first practical steps towards the implementation of the nuclear power programme that KSA is envisioning. The project is devised to be a multi-year co-operation between both organizations.
K. A. Care said that the programme was launched at a meeting on 23 and 24 April at K.A.CARE’s headquarters in Riyadh in the presence of officials of the two parties and the executive team for the project. During the meeting, plans of cooperation and executive plans between the two entities have been discussed and the accompanying projects were signed off so that they can be carried out in the coming months of this year.
