TVA said, 6 February, that its Board of Directors had approved a recommendation to submit the necessary paperwork to file a license renewal application with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The process is expected to take around 30 months and will cost around $23 million, TVA said.

Renewing the existing licenses will allow the Sequoyah 1&2 to operate until 2040 and 2041, respectively. Both units are 1160 MW Westinghouse pressurized water reactors (PWRs). Sequoyah 2 has recently completed a $376 million steam generator replacement project.
