US-based Silex said Global Laser Enrichment on 27 April resumed operations at its laser uranium enrichment test loop facility in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Operations were suspended in March in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, with all GLE staff excluded from site. “

All activities will be conducted under strict procedures and protocols aimed at minimising the risk of exposure to, or the spread of the Covid-19 virus. It is possible that operations could again be suspended if there are any additional risks to workers' health and safety, however Silex will not report any further temporary suspension unless it lasts for a significant time.”

Silex also said the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission had advised GLE of the completion of its acceptance for review of GLE's application for approval for the GLE restructure. The NRC also advised that it anticipates completing the approval process by the end of 2020, consistent with prior advice.

The proposed restructuring, will see Silex and Canada's Cameco Corp jointly purchase GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy's share in the company.
