Swedish construction company Skanska has signed an agreement with Finnish waste management company Posiva on the construction of an encapsulation plant for used nuclear fuel for about €45 million ($51m).
The 11,500 square meter encapsulation facility will be built in Eurajoki, Olkiluoto, Finland. In the encapsulation plant, used nuclear fuel will be packed in copper and cast iron canisters for transfer to their final disposal facility at Onkalo.
Skanska and Posiva signed a contract for the development phase of the project in November 2018. Skanska’s scope of supply includes building construction as well as mechanical and electrical engineering works. The planned completion time for the encapsulation plant construction project will be in summer 2022.
Skanska has about 38,000 employees and sales in 2018 totalled SEK170 billion ($18bn).
