Hyundai Heavy Industries emergency generatorSouth Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has teamed up with its trading unit, Hyundai Corporation to sign a $49 million deal with Indian firm Powerica to supply emergency generators for nuclear reactors.

The generators include ten units of the 6.3MW HiMsen propulsion system developed by HHI, which will be supplied to units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam nuclear plant in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, by 2022.  

The emergency generators are capable of stable power supply even during an 8.0 magnitude earthquake, and haves been certified tests according to the Korean electric industry technical standard (KEPIC), HHI said.

HHI has supplied a total of 11 emergency generators to plants in the UAE, UK and Pakistan since 2010 and hopes to win more orders in India, which is expected to build 21 new nuclear units by 2031.
