Former US Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham has called for the USA to double its nuclear capacity by 2030.
Urging Congress to overturn a court ruling that rejected Environmental Protection Agency radiation standards for the planned Yucca Mountain waste repository, Abraham endorsed federal subsidies for the construction of the first few new reactors, echoing recent industry calls for loan guarantees in comprehensive energy legislation.
“I am not calling for massive ongoing subsidies to the nuclear industry,” Abraham said, “But I do believe some federal financial participation is in order to help defray a percentage of the high, first-time costs associated with new generation construction.”
