Norwegian authorities have been admitted to the Russian military base at Andreeva Bay, near Murmansk, to inspect decommissioned nuclear submarines and the condition of spent fuel that the West hopes to clean up.

“What has to be done quickly is to organise the fuel elements, which are in the open,” said Norwegian state secretary Espen Barth Eide. “Snow and rain can cause radioactive material to get into the groundwater and then run into the fjord.”
