The Stade nuclear station in Germany will be shut down in November this year, under a licence application for decommissioning open for public consultation for two months to 21 July.
According to the application, the 672MWe PWR, now owned by E.On, will be finally shut down in November 2003. Before decommissioning begins, the spent fuel will be shipped to a reprocessing plant, which is expected to take until 2005.
The decommissioning costs have been estimated at r530 million. There will be about 400,000t of waste for disposal. Of this, about 3% is low and intermediate level waste and E.On has applied for a 40-year operating licence to store it at the site. There will then be a 10-12 year period consisting of five phases until it becomes a greenfield site.
