The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has released a technical standard advising on the detection of illicit movements of radioactive materials at frontiers and industry control points.
ISO said it wanted to provide a common technical base for monitoring, helping communication between regulatory authorities.
As well as advising on stationary and portable instruments, ISO 22188:2004 covers search techniques, “locating and possibly identifying radioactive substances at border checkpoints, from international land borders to maritime ports, airports and similar locations where goods or individuals are checked.” Said ISO: “Even without malicious or criminal intent, radioactive materials may have serious negative health and safety consequences.”
