India’s state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has won an INR7.36bn ($113.1m) contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to supply steam generators for the 2.8GWe Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojna (GHAVP) project being developed in Haryana, India.
BHEL will be responsible for supplying the steam generators for the 700MWe indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors planned for Gorakhpur plant. BHEL will manufacture the steam generators at its facility in Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu state.
The Gorakhpur project, estimated to cost INR205.94bn is being developed in phases. The first phase involves commissioning two units with a combined generation capacity of 1400MWe by 2020-21. The second phase is for two more reactor units also with a combined capacity of 1400MWe. The 700MWe indigenously developed reactors will be similar to those installed at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPP-3&4) and Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPP-7& 8).
The foundation stone for Gorakhpur was laid in January 2014. The project will be the first of its kind in Haryana state and the 21st in India. BHEL said in a statement that it has so far supplied 38 steam generators for various Indian nuclear plants. According to local media, India’s Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has issued an “excavation clearance” for the first two units at Gorakhpur.
